Body mass index (BMI) is a screening tool used to determine how much body fat you are carrying. It is based on your height and weight. While it does not measure body fat directly, there is a strong correlation between BMI and direct body fat measures such as hydrostatic (underwater) weighing. A high BMI increases the risk for such diseases and conditions as some forms of cancer, stroke, heart disease, hypertension, and sleep apnea.
